Biorepack unveils new collective trademark indicating membership in the organic recycling system
Milan, June 13, 2025 - A hand pointing toward a waste bin, an apple core symbolizing biodegradability and compostability, and a small pile of food scraps representing organic waste. Below, the words “Organico Biorepack” indicate that the end-of-life destination for compostable bioplastic packaging is recycling within industrial composting plants, promoted by the supply chain under the Biorepack Consortium. These are the visual elements of the new voluntary collective trademark that Biorepack presented to its stakeholder network.

The Consortium aims to achieve multiple goals with this initiative. Firstly, the trademark will help protect and enhance the value of an exemplary production chain—an expression of the circular bioeconomy in which Italy is a recognized continental leader. At the same time, the trademark, in line with the PPWR regulation allowing voluntary communication of EPR system membership, serves as proof of a company’s affiliation with Biorepack’s consortium system.
But the trademark also provides a crucial benefit to the public: it offers practical help to citizens, making it easier for them to correctly identify and sort compostable packaging, thereby improving both the quality and quantity of organic waste separation.
The new collective trademark, which identifies the end-of-life path for compostable bioplastic packaging, is meant to complement—not replace—the compostability certifications required for these products (which are a prerequisite to obtain the trademark).
It was officially registered with the Italian Patent and Trademark Office of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy on May 19. However, this milestone was the culmination of a longer journey: the result of 24 months of research and analysis commissioned by Biorepack to Deloitte, with the aim of listening to the concerns and perspectives of stakeholders in the bioplastics supply chain and ultimately creating a trademark that is as clear, intuitive, and explanatory as possible.
“We are confident that this pictogram will not only give greater visibility to Italian companies in the compostable bioplastics sector but will soon become an essential tool for guiding citizens, families, businesses, and commercial activities during waste disposal,” says Marco Versari, President of Biorepack. “Too often, people find themselves unable to easily and quickly identify where a piece of packaging should be disposed of. This lack of clarity can lead to mistakes that contaminate organic waste, complicate processing at facilities, and hinder progress toward improved recycling rates and the achievement of European and national targets.”
The new trademark also highlights the importance of having a dedicated entity managing the end-of-life of compostable bioplastics.
“The Biorepack trademark is undoubtedly a tool that brings clarity and emphasizes the value of an entire supply chain. We hope it will soon be adopted by the hundreds of companies that are members of our consortium, and that brand owners and retailers will recognize its added value in terms of customer service—and, indirectly, as a benefit to society. Starting in the coming weeks, the Consortium will promote the trademark to citizens and businesses through a multi-channel communication campaign,” concludes Versari.
The application of the trademark on compostable bioplastic packaging is governed by specific guidelines and can only occur with authorization from Biorepack.
