Bioplastics

Compostable bioplastic packaging

What is it?

Biodegradable and compostable bioplastic packaging refers to packaging made from polymeric raw materials, whether from bio-based or fossil sources, which can be recycled together with food waste and transformed into compost.

The packaging for which Biorepack is responsible includes packaging and packaging waste made of compostable bioplastic certified in accordance with EN 13432 and bearing at least one of the compostability marks (on the individual package or packaging).

Some examples of the most common compostable bioplastics

  • Bags

    carrier bags

  • Bags for fruit and vegetables

or other foods sold loose (at fresh food counters), equivalent to the most common food waste bags

  • Cutlery and kitchen utensils

    plates, glasses and trays

  • Extensible films

IV gamma pouches, trays, nets and sacks

  • Capsules

    for beverages and coffee

How to manage foof waste

The introduction and use of (non-packaging) bags for the separate collection of household food waste has made a significant contribution to municipalities achieving their waste collection targets. After being used many times, bioplastic packaging such as carrier bags and fruit and vegetable bags should be reused to collect household food waste.
